The Saga of The New Shoe Blues

or, there must be some shoes on sale somewhere   .   .   .

As some of you already know, The Sandspur Band has a  couple of songs in their repertoire that are original  compositions.    In addition to the CD title song 'Shine Your Light', Clarence also authored a song called 'The New Shoe Blues'.  Back in younger days, long before the band got together, Clarence sat down with his ukulele and came up with some verses for  a song.  The inspiration for this was from his dear wife Zetty's propensity to purchase new shoes.  Not just a few shoes, but bunches of 'em.   Her reasoning was that lady's shoes are hard to find in the right size, color, blah, blah, blah   and so when you find some shoes that you like, you just have to get several pair.   (Is this sounding familiar to most of you married guys out there?)   Clarence wrote a couple of verses and then forgot about them until one day when he happened to mention them to the rest of the band.  We asked to hear the song and then decided to add some more verse and make it a complete composition.

Lead Spur Mel  and Clarence started writing and before we knew it, we had eight verses.  You have to understand that when you're dealing with women's clothing and accessories, there is plenty of material to use.  We had more shoe verses and some describing hats and dresses.  We realized that more than three or four verses would be tiresome (and would probably alienate half of our audiences), so we re-wrote the song with four verses.  Clarence sings three of them and we put in a rebuttal verse for Susie to perform.  So that is the long, sad, but true, story of how 'The New Shoe Blues' was written.
